Strange tastings today in Santa Barbara County. I tasted bottle after bottle of wines with ugly finishes, herbaceous weirdness, and off balanced acidity. What I did enjoy was pretty extravagantly expensive, and priced out of practicality. I particularly liked the Fiddlehead cellars Fiddlestix pinot, but at $38.00, I can find a nice Pommard or Beaune that will out perform it any day. If you're looking for big juice, then it's OK, but in general, the Pinots down here seem really overpriced.
I do seem to enjoy the Syrahs down here, as the weather seems to cooperate, as well as the Rhone whites, roussane & marsanne, but most everything else disappoints.
I am bringing back some good finds though. Ethan makes a nice Sangiovese that is hard to find in the Bay Area, and Rozak has a decent Pinot for $25.00. More on those once they get opened.
