I know, I know. ..rum & tonic is supposed to be made with white rum. It's a slightly prettier drink and what a shame to use such good rum. But think about it for a minute. Mixed drinks are better with premium spirits and a classic drink like the R&T is elevated to a new level by using something as fine as the Matusalem Gran Reserva. Matusalem Rum was founded in 1872 in Cuba and today, the original recipe has been resurrected in Santiago, Dominican Republic. This 15-year old Rum is aged in French oak which imparts a distinctly heady vanilla aroma with a touch of orange peel. It's big enough to put in a snifter to enjoy like a cognac, but when it's hot, try it with some good tonic and a small chunk of lime.
What you see here is a very tall drink, made in the delicate bar series of glasses from Riedel called O-Riedel: H20 Classic Bar Longdrink. I really like these glasses and got them on Amazon for a steal.
This particular ratio is 3 oz. Matusalem Gran Reserva Rum and 5 oz. of Schwepps tonic with a nice hunk of lime, crushed lightly and added to the glass. Stir gently and enjoy.
Full disclosure: I received this as a press sample.
