Gulfi
ROSSOIBLEO 2003
Nero d'Avola 100%
First of all, the color is amazing, not unlike a not-so-new Zinfandel, purple around the edges. Nose is full of blackberry, spice notes, cherries, slightly floral, with no off-odors or Sulfur Dioxide dust. Body is full, great mouth-feel, and balanced. Good acidity makes it have a nice freshness to it.
This has flavors like no Sicilian wine I've ever had -big berry and bing cherry mouthfuls, with a lovely long finish. Bright and fruity. An excellent value at around $15.00.
Poggio Bidini
Nero D'Avola 2003
When first poured, this wine shows a different, more traditional expression of the Nero D'Avola grape. While the Gulfi was a big, spicy, new-world red, the Pogio Bidini is reminicent of the body and perfume of an old skool Corvo. The flavor, though, is modern and lovely. It has ubtle flavors and cherry and cassis. The wine was closed at first, but once it got a half-hour of air, it opens up nicely, revealing mint and chocolate aromas. It reminds me of a young northern Rhône. I will definitely buy some. A steal at $12.99.
Both of these were at K&L in San Francisco
