You can see the hot theme continues. It's hot in August in the East Bay.
I was thrilled to see that there was a new retail outlet in Berkeley (4th past University - away from the commercial district) of wine.com the other day. I stopped in and got a few things including this excellent Pinot Gris from one of my favorite producers in Alsace, Trimbach. Look for a tall green bottle, like a riesling or gewertz for Alsacian Pinot Gris.
Pinot Gris has been one of my favorite drinks of late, including some excellent American Gris, from Oregon and California. For a bargain, try the lovely MacMurray Ranch Pinot Gris 2007 and for something a bit more serious, the Robert Sinskey from Carneros. These wines have a great freshness and nice aromatics, but for the real deal, look to Alsace --especially Hugel and Trimbach.
The Trimbach Reserve Pinot Gris 2003 is a perfect blend of the sweet petrol aromas of an aged riesling along with the fresh floral scents of honeysuckle and citrus blossom. It's both refreshingly light and very serious. This is a sipping wine but don't stray away from serving it with food. Try it with simple grilled fish with little or no sauce to make the aromatics of the wine pop out. This is available at the wine.com retail store, but only the 2004 is on their current list. Highly recommended and around $22.
